Channels and Gmail
Working at the summer house for two weeks non-stop is not as much fun as I first thought. I've been saved by two recent discoveries: Channels and Gmail.
Channels is an application that I found in the N95's Download section under services in Finland. It's a collection of categorized publications like TV channels, newspapers, magazines etc. The application is beautiful and works well, unfortunately the same cannot be said on all content. For example, The Fitness magazine features following articles in July: Pakkasta ja viimaa vastaan (Protect yourself from the frostbites), Älä osta suksea säkissä (advice on buying skis), Satsaa hiihtovälineisiin (invest in your skiing gear). Regardless of somewhat limited and irrelevant content, I will follow this Channel to see if it improves. A message to MTV3 Handy and all other content providers: Please stop filling your sites with wallpapers and ringtones. Some people actually pay for the service and would like to get something useful out of it.
Another nice discovery was Gmail for mobile http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/mail/index.html. Works nicely, N95 opens all attachments too. The only question here is: how come PC users are able to tick 'remember me in this computer' box when logging into a service, but a mobile phone user needs to tap in their credentials in another window (!!), with a feature that turns your letters and numbers into stars before you have a chance to see if it was the correct one.
As a summary, some nice apps out there but mobile users are still a tier two user category, so obviously that service providers should wake up soon to the euros and dollars lost in opportunities just given up by lazyness to think twice.
PS: A big thanks for YLE for nice Channels site.
