Nokia World and Eco Sensor Concept

Beginning of December I traveled again to Amsterdam to attend Nokia World 2007. It was both exciting and nerve recking at the same time, since I had been responsible for setting up Nokia Research Center's presence there, including the More Vision conference stream with exciting guest speakers from MIT, University of Washington and WWF, closing keynote by Head of Nokia Research Center, 7 technology demos from NRC including one of my own projects, the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept. Everything went well with the 2800 guests from all over the world, so I could be pleased with the outcome in the end.

I am especially excited about the eco sensor concept. It was a project that I worked on for months, trying to come up with a completely fresh approach to how phones or other communications devices could be built and used in the future so that they themselves have a smaller ecological footprint, but they also help their users to live and act in a more environmentally sound ways. I worked with researchers in display technologies, power management, nanomaterials, reusable and recyclable materials, printed electronics, sensor technologies, and naturally with design people who were able to give these future technologies a functioning form that appeals to human senses.  I hope this concept sets some sort of expectations for future device and service development in the internet and communications industry. There are photos for download here and more insight into Nokia's research stuff here.

So this is how 2007 turned out to be.

2008 starts with new challenges, as I end the one and a half year journey as the Head of Marketing for Nokia Research Center, and move to Nokia's S60 software development unit. Software that enables rich internet experience on any type of portable device, be it what used to be called smartphone but Nokia now calls multimedia computer, PDA, internet tablet or younameit, is one of the most critical pieces of technology right this moment. Without good quality software that gives all developers the possibility to let their innovations flourish freely, the much hyped internet in your pocket will remain in its current scattered and compromised form. I will surely continue blogging about this topic in the future.

Prosperous New Year 2008 to everyone.
