Facebook's fastest growing group: Women 55+

We've already known that grandmoms save the world by consuming far more money on culture than anyone else (by culture I mean going to the opera, the museum and paying for artsy film festivals), by being environmentally cautious consumers, and just by generally loving everyone. God bless grandmoms.

But now is seems that older women also begin to be an important customer to social networks and IT services. According to
Inside Facebook  the recent statistics show that women over 55 are the fastest growing user group in Facebook, up 175.3% in the last 120 days. Facebook usage in general is growing faster with women than men in almost every age group. Women comprise 56.2% of Facebook’s audience, up from 54.3% late last year.

Another entry shows a statistic that the users of Facebook and Myspace in general are getting older - and wealthier. Should this be considered a bit when designing devices and services?

I've already started the nanovalo.net initiative to gather feedback from women 40+ on their hopes and requirements on mobile phones and services. The experience from this project has been that these people are not willing to proactively shout their demands to the world, you need to go to where they are and ask them directly. I should really pep up the Nanovalo Facebook cause to get some real rallying ongoing.

I've started a discussion thread on "the perfect phone" in nanovalo board. So far it's just me talking to myself. Please won't you join and challenge me there.
