Symbian vs. Android
Nice to see that some people still say things the way they are, straight out. Lee Williams is reported to have said that Android is not open because it's controlled by Google. Google responds that Symbian is not open because you have to join a club in order to get the code. Read the story and judge for yourself.
Related to Google's comment, there is one thing about Symbian Foundation which hasn't been communicated enough. The platform will initially be licensed to foundation members under a royalty-free Symbian Foundation license, and then open sourced under EPL within 2 years from there. The reason for this delay is not that the companies contributing initial Symbian and S60 code would somehow want to hold on to their patents as long as they can. The reason simply is that this huge chunk of currently proprietary code that is going to be given out for free, include a lot of IPR from third party companies who have nothing to do with the foundation, so it will take some time to replan and negotiate. There are many license agreements in place that cannot be violated just because Nokia and Symbian want to donate their platform away. Plan is to get as much of this third party IP under EPL as possible, but in the end it's up to the companies owning their own IPR.

The deal with Android is that there’s a lot of hype surrounding it. Hype that promotes laziness on the part of phone makers to a point where it’s okay to just slap the stock OS as it is, untouched. When looking at the line of Android devices, you can’t help but notice that they are extremely similar
