Another alternative energy source is being developed: Gigantic batteries created from the chemical differences between salt water and fresh water. Imagine each river mouth and delta being turned into a gigantic battery creating electricity from the interaction between the sea and the river.
Norwegians are conducting trials already. Those lucky devils. First they discover oil from their shore and live nicely off it for 30-40 years. Now when oil begins to be passé they will have infinite sources of electricity from all the fjords and rivers running into the north sea. Ain't fair...
