I visited London this week, and thought to finally start using Nokia's mobile carbon offset tool. It was easy. If you have a Symbian S60 powered device, first go to your Download folder. In there, click on applications and look for the ECO Zone. Within, click on We: It will take you to Nokia's we: website with all kinds of ideas, services and information on Nokia's environmental consumer services. If you don't want to stay and learn more, just find the we:offset download client and install.
Once you have the client installed, just start using. Open it from your phone's desktop, insert your destination and it calculates your CO2 emissions for you. My two-way trip from Helsinki to London produced 0,40 tons of carbon dioxyde, and I compensated for it by paying 4 euros (including 0.72 euros of VAT). I paid with Visa and got a receipt both by SMS and email. The money is used to "fund projects which absorb, reduce or avoid an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases being released elsewhere".
A great tool, easy to use and makes me feel a bit better for putting those 0,40 tons of CO2 in the air. A small minus for Nokia on information where the money is used exactly, and how I could track the use. Let me find that out and I'll report back.
Nokia environmental people really quickly came back to answer my question: the information is there on the website, I just hadn't seen it.
