Welcome to Finland, Google II
Earlier in this blog I commented how Google is coming to Finland in a secretive way, not allowing their business partners to comment on why they chose Hamina as the location for their new server farm, and if they plan to use the renewable energy provided by WinWind, a wind energy company located in the same complex.
Last week Google did tell about their plans to Finnish media, including Helsingin Sanomat where I gathered these facts. They will invest 200 million euros in the new server facility, creating jobs to 50 engineers and other staff in the city hit by hard unemployment. This will be the first Google server farm in an old industrial facility. According to Google, reasons for coming to Hamina were business oriented and secure environment, ready infrastructure and available work force. Also, the fact that WinWind is building four wind mills for electricity in vicinity, were a decisive factor. Servers will be cooled using sea water.
Google will donate part of the land to the city of Hamina, who will then lease them onto other companies. This new technology- and IT hub will eventually be a work place for some 450 people.
