First Life and Second Life

Some things stand the test of time better than others. Today's paper version of Kauppalehti (in Finnish) has two different articles on the same page, which made me think.

First, the legendary Life Magazine (est. 1883, or 1936) has digitalised and opened its photo repository. You can search, download, print, distribute and even buy the pictures as framed. They are uploading up to 3000 new images per day.

Then, Second Life (est. 2003) is slowly dying. Companies and other organizations are no longer building their virtual campuses in this once so revolutionary virtual space, and users are fleeing off to other social media services.

Notice the similarity of their web design. The "old" life is apparently conquering the "new" life using their own weapons.
People are drawn to good old things, only using the new channels. Such is the sign of times.
