From Saab 96 to Fisker Karma

The first Saab 96 came out from the Valmet Automotive car factory in Uusikaupunki in 1968. The license plate of this beautiful vehicle was EKA-96 (eka=first in Finnish), and it was given to president Kekkonen. A big moment in Finnish history.

Since that year Finns have loved Saab as if it was our own brand. My father has owned some 5-10 differents Saabs over the years, and that was also my first car when I learned to drive. The recent shameful status of the company has been devastating, bought by GM and now in the verge of bancruptcy. Manufacturing Saab's in Finland ended 2003, but Finns take Saab's history seriously. Here's an example story.

The plant in Uusikaupunki has also made Porche's for some years, until last year stroke a deal with a company called Fisker who had made an electric concept sportscar, Karma. Now, Karmas are in production and the first ones are expected on market later this year.

I had like the idea of an electric sportscar, but didn't realise just how big news the car was before openeded the MIT Tech Review today. This will be the first plug-in hybrid car to be sold in the US. It can be driven for 50 miles on battery alone, and solar cells located on the roof can be used as add-on power for cooling or heating the interior, for example. Remember the discussion Joe and I had on our hybrids in Joe's blog Gumption.

Being a sportscar, its special sports model can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. I'm not sure about the idea of combining environmental technology with non-environmetal behavior - who needs to be accelerating at ridiculously high speeds when driving sensibly would be the environmentally way to go. But I guess if you do want to be speeding, better speed on an electric car. I can admit from my experience with the Toytota Prius, that passing a tractor on a narrow and winding road can sometimes feel like a death sport because the car just won't accelerate fast enough.

Talking about sportscars, another company called Tesla Motors is building an electric Roadster that can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. I hope that's not going to be the standard speeding behavior on public roads in the future.

Nonetheless, I'm happy for the finnish car industry workers that they get to be part of building something new and unique. Sob for Saab but times move on and new technology brings new possibilities. Let's all hope they are good ones.

Karma is an interesting concept and close to reality now with Valmet stepping up to produce the car. With nice numbers for performance, the Karma will reach a top speed of 125 mph and can hit 60 mph in under six seconds, according to Fisker.
