Moving image in print

The September issue of Time Inc. magazine will include a chip running a video clip, advertising Pepsi Max. The implementation is of course clunky, as the technology is far from optional. Its a 2,7 mm thick, 5 cm wide screen embedded in a newspaper sheet of paper (or must be more like cardboard if 2,7 mm thick). It operates like the ancient old singing greeting cards, i.e. turning a page will trigger audio and video. In itself, this is of course a good step towards integrating the benefits of internet richness, without harming the business model and state-of-art interface of a printed newspaper.

Related, and perhaps more interesting, is the development on eInk and printed electronics. The
Finnish city of Oulu
is investing resources into making the latest research in this area to be productized. Oulu Innovation Centre, established in February, founded a research unit called PrintoCent together with partners. In June, PrintoCent received 10 million euros for commercialising research in printed electronics and optical measurement technology. In practice, this will mean prototypes and real product demos.

I really, really, really, hope that this will not turn out to be one of those EU and government funded projects that will consume all the money and as result prove very little concrete value. I think I will start putting some pressure to them, please help me following their progress and sending reminder emails once in a while. Let's see if that will have any impact.

Maybe you should consider adding additional videos or charts to your weblog posts to make the visitors more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire post and it has been really great but since I'm more of a visual learner, some more vids and charts would help a lot. Nevertheless, the topic here is really worth pondering about. Thanks again.
