Entre-, intra-, and innerpreneurs
When talking with people in the Mobile Brain Bank network, I was again reminded of the concepts of entrepreneur and intrapreneur. Many of them have just started their own company, are considering, or already planning for it. Others have a mindset of an intrapreneur and wish to find a position in an existing company to match their talent, skills, vision and drive. There's also a term that was new to me, the innerpreneur. Let's clarify.

An entrepreneur is a person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. It is an ambitious leader who combines land, labor, and capital to often create and market new goods or services. Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to the type of personality who is willing to take upon herself or himself a new venture or enterprise and accepts full responsibility for the outcome. (Wikipedia).

Intrapreneurship is the practice of using entrepreneurial skills without taking on the risks or accountability associated with entrepreneurial activities. It is practiced by employees within an established organization using a business model. Employees, perhaps engaged in a special project within a larger firm are supposed to behave as entrepreneurs, even though they have the resources and capabilities of the larger firm to draw upon. (Wikipedia).
I feel close to the idea of an intrapreneur, yet Wikipedia's description doesn't really resonate with me. It sounds so very corporately planned and organized. To me an intrapreneur is someone who works in a company, but is defining his/her own agenda, objectives and ways of working. Often they create their own jobs. It's a person who is well networked, avoids taking direct orders from anyone, and uses their own judgement in even bigger things.
Sometimes I'm asked how come I can survive in a stiff corporate environment. First I'd give a long answer about Nokia's culture (not stiff, although at times, or in some parts a bit slow or not enough organic, in other parts and at other times extremely innovative and un-chained). Then, my advise to anyone working in a big enterprise and wanting to keep sanity and dignity: "Don't ask for permissions." If you feel you are doing the right thing, for heaven's sake don't go around giving people the chance to shoot you down. Just do it, and face the consequences later. If you're doing a good job you'll be promoted. If not, you will draw conclusions yourself.

The idea of innerpreneurship also feels familiar. Innerpreneurship is the practice of starting a new business in response to identified opportunities, personal growth needs and a desire to create social change. Innerpreneurship is often a difficult undertaking, as a vast majority of new businesses fail. Innerpreneurial activities are substantially different depending on the type of organization that is being started. Innerpreneurship ranges in scale from solo projects (even involving the innerpreneur only part-time) to major undertakings creating many job opportunities. (Wikipedia).
Although I haven't started any businesses, I can see elements of innerpreneurship in http://www.nanovalo.net, http://www.mobilebrainbank.org, and the many writings on this blog ranging from opportunitites for people in developing countries, environmental challenges, and how the right science and technology can result a better future.
It feels good to have a name for it. On the other hand, it's being categorized. In the end, however, I think we all want to "belong". Belonging to a gang of intra- and innerpreneurs doesn't sound too bad. I can live with that for now.
