Vladimir Putin, Placido Domingo lost in iPhone

A brief, one column article in today's culture section of Helsingin Sanomat caught my eye. The general and artistic director of St.Petersburg's world famous Mariinsky Theater,  Mr. Valery Gergiev was visiting Turku music festival in Finland. During the festival, a very hush-hush undercover operation was launched to find Mr. Gergiev's lost iPhone. The phone contained direct phone numbers to people like Vladimir Putin, a number of Russian oligarchs, Placido Domingo, Esa-Pekka Salonen and other classical music superstars.

The phone was lost during a sauna evening after their second concert in Turku. It was later recovered from awoken taxi driver during early morning hours. Mr. Gergiev was reported to be very relieved.

The article doesn't tell wether Mr. Gergiev was worried that the secret phone numbers of his VIP friends would be going to wrong hands, possibly forcing Mr. Putin to  change his phone number, or it the concern was that he himself would lose those numbers. The latter would imply that the Mariinsky Theater is not taking full advantage of the technical capabilites of today's smartphones.

Locating the lost iPhone should have been simple enough using the "Find My iPhone" feature: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/news/2009/06/find-my-iphone-now-available.html

If the unit was lost for good, then Mr. Gergiev could have used the remote wipe feature to securely erase the phone (OTA) and then restore the contacts via his iTunes backup to his next iPhone. One also hopes that Mr. Gergiev used a pass key to lock his phone.
