World's most sustainable technology company
This is a week for Nokia. In addition to being ranked the 5th best brand in the world, Dow Jones Index has named Nokia as World's Most Sustainable Technology Company.

From the announcement: "Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is the world's most sustainable technology company according to the 2009-10 edition of the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes that went live today. Already rated for several years as the leader within the Europe and Communications categories, this year Nokia was also chosen as "World Technology Supersector Leader" making it number one across the entire global technology sector.
The Dow Jones Indexes are globally respected rankings of how well the world's leading corporations are integrating sustainability into their businesses. Selecting components from 2,500 companies in over 50 countries, the indexes are relied upon by leading institutional investors."
Nokia has been given recognition of its continuous focus on environment on all fronts. Greenpeace has also ranked Nokia as the most sustainable CE manufacturer, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the company received the GSMA's first award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution. In August, Nokia was chosen as India's "Green Company of the Year" in the 10th Annual Voice and Data 100 Awards.

The Treehugger also gives Nokia credit for a humble comms policy, thus remaining credible when something is announced:
"Nokia has always taken the understated approach to showing its greener side - rather than constantly sending out a barrage of announcements, it usually comes up with an improvement or new plan and you find out about it at a tradeshow or a press release sent out with little fanfare. In part because of this modesty, we take announcements like this with far less skepticism than we might normally, and so give a congrats to Nokia for earning their placement. "
Thanks Treehugger, and thanks Johanna.

I have seen this achievement posted around the web in a few places. Although NOKIA itself takes a humble approach, I hope other manufacturers are watching it's innovation and kudos closely and following suit.

Good for Nokia, but I don't get it - under what criteria is a technology manufacturer judged to be environmentally respectful or "green"?
