Gathering data out in the jungle, deserts and flooded areas

A close family member is going to spend two months in Brazil. I'm slightly worried that he will not have time to get all of the necessary vaccines in order before he needs to leave. He will need to be traveling in the rural areas, too, where e.g. the Dengue fever lurks. This reminded me of a demo I saw in Nokia World, the Nokia Data Gathering system.

Nokia Data Gathering helps organizations to collect data using mobile phones instead of paper forms, PDAs or laptops. Since mobile phones can send data from many remote locations, collected data can be transmitted in near real-time for analysis. The use cases for collecting data in rural and forest areas vary from agriculture, census (population), environmental conservation, emergency services, health, and of course commercial applications.

Environmental and emergency based data gathering needs are also timely, with increasing amount of drought, floods etc. due to global warming. Indonesia and Kenya are the immediate examples today.

Nokia Data Gathering is a platform-independent solution based on commercially available hardware and open-source software technologies. It is designed to integrate smoothly with existing systems.
