A week in Harvard - Real Options
The first day of a one week module on Strategic based Finance with Harvard Business School is behind us. I'm taking it as part of an MBA program with the University of Technology in Helsinki. I've never been to New England before, and already I can say I love it here.
We were kicked off by Peter Tufano, a professor of Financial Management and a Senior Associate Dean for Planning and University Affairs. Professor Tufano has a long career behind him as head of finance unit at HBS etc, and with research on mutual funds, corporate financial engineering and consumer finance.
In consumer finance, his expertise is on how to leverage financial innovations to serve the financial service needs of the poor. So, I spent a day with one of the top experts in the world on sub-prime loans and complicated financial instruments. Talk about historical timing.
Our class was on Net Present Value and Real Option Analysis. In preparation to understand real options, we went through an introduction on financial options (long, short, call, put). A part of this material contained an explanation on how to manouvre synthetic stocks and bonds. By creating a synthetic stock or bond, one can turn any financial asset into any other financial asset. This was the ABC on our current economic situation.
The class also spent a couple of hours on a guided walk tour around the campus area. I've uploaded some photos here.
I spent the evening at the Harvard Square Coop bookstore browsing through books, and listening to Michael Sandel present his new book, Justice. One of the best evenings ever.

I see that there is a lot of attention lately on financing the poor. I've even casually read few success story articles on that and I am confident that's gonna become a trend in the near future. Microfinancing in the poor areas is the answer to many financial problems on a microeconomic level but also macroeconomically. I am sure that class on finance was very interesting.

That is understandable that money makes us free. But what to do when someone does not have money? The one way is to receive the home loans or just secured loan.
