Inductive charging getting better

One of the cool, helpful and accessible technologies introduced recently is inductive, or wireless charging. It's a way of charging an electronic device with no wires or plugs, as seen in electronic toothbrushes and shavers today. New, more enhanced implementations are being productized, such as the Powerkiss table for example.

I like the idea very much, not only for good looking and spagetti-free furnishing, but for the advantages it has for the elderly and disabled people who may have difficulties in getting the plugs connected. Having just returned from a week long trip where my phone was acting as my only email, sms, camera and voice call device, thus always empty battery, I will also apperciate the ability to charge your device without having to worry about the particular plug standard in different countries.

But what about the environmental side of it? It's easy to think that when electricity is not directed through a wire, it's easy to generate significant energy losses. How is this dealt with? For example Wikipedia says that "the major disadvantage of inductive charging is its lower efficiency than direct contact, thus limiting it to low-power applications". The article also mentions heat generation, but nothing about energy losses, which is why it is disputed.

A google search on "inductive charging energy consumption" brings up several concerns on this issue. For example, these Lecture Notes on Computer Science take a scientific approach to the dilemma, this Yahoo answer writes that "Inductive charging ...  wastes a lot of energy .. is certainly NOT  politically correct, and so is rejected by most marketing departments. Only the biggest and most arrogant companies (such as a certain large automobile company!) would have the temerity to use this technology for an "energy saving" car.

Perhaps the best discussion on the topic is found on the Treehugger  review on Dell's Latitude Z laptop, implementing wireless charging. The article starts with a doubtful view, stating that more than 50% of the energy can be lost in the process, and listing other concerns in the product, too. However, after speaking with Dell people, the updated sections inform us of the improvements Dell has done on their implementation of inductive charging. If Dell can do it, others can too. The comments on that page are informative reading, too.

The Wireless Power Consortium is trying to work out international standards for wireless charging. They also naturally pay attention to the efficiency issue. Their energy consumption calculates that if one wireless charger replaces two wired chargers, it can in fact be more efficient due to better standby rates. Having an interoperable standard may lead to a situation where one wireless charge could replace even more old wired chargers, so there is also material savings implied. That's good news.

Now, we need more companies join this consortium. Nokia, Philips, Sanyo and Samsung are there already, but where are all the other CE manufacturers?

Inductive is a magnetic process, so there is no reason it couldn't be used under water. Whether the products that inductive charging might be used on are worth waterproofing so other parts do not short out is another question.
