Life after Slush

So, Slush came and went. It was a parade of new Finnish startups, many of them a social web, or just web but including a mobile application as well. The selected Slush Seven finalists were:

  • Language Cafe
  • Wireless Information Point (wip)
  • Forecast your well
  • Econetix
  • Mauton
  • Sibesonke

Other interesting startups that I discovered were Flowdock, Picmeleo, Hammerkit, 2general, eat.fi, Fambit, Lumoflow and Floobs. We got a nice coverage in the Finnish media, with FST covering it on TV, and Ilta-Sanomat having a two-page article titled "A new Nokia to be born from Slush". The article in itself was nice, with an interview of Anssi Vanjoki and introduction to the Slush Seven, but I wouldn't call it a search of new Nokia. There's only one Nokia, and whatever fantastic the new startups end up doing let's not burden them with such request.

Anssi reminded us nicely that two remarkable open source initiatives have roots in Helsinki: Linux and Symbian Foundation.

I was also hijacked to a panel discussion, that ended up taking two hours, and ranging between PR and Finnish shortcomings. It was fun. Put #slush09 to Twitter to get the best feeling from the two days.
