95% of PC energy is running idle

This sentence stopped me: "Did you know that 95% of an average personal computer’s power is running idle?" No I did not. Think about the amount of energy that is consumed by keeping our PCs and laptops running. We've learned to switch off lights in a room when we are not there, and turn off our cars while waiting for someone, but we don't think about the energy when working on our computer (well.. I don't).

I spotted a small news that a company called Techila Technologies has won an innovation award and got interested. They claim to both accelerate computing power and save energy costs. Their website is not loaded with technical information, but from what I gather they offer a grid system that enables companies to conduct computing jobs on their servers, rather than a company's own PCs. Currently their program is used in financial risk calculus, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

Grid computing is a cool thing, but perhaps not the silver bullet for regular PC use where heavy computing poer is not needed. But something should be done about that 95%. One way to approach the problem is to build cloud services that run on environmentally sound server farms.

Another is to use your mobile for those tasks where it can be done. Browsing the web with your mobile consumes tens of times less energy than using a laptop, which in turn consumes tens of times less than a PC.
