Fuel cell cars

The new Honda FCX Clarity looks a lot like Prius. And why not, it's an iconic design mark of an environmentally friendly piece of technology.  The fuel cell Honda works on an electronic engine, just like the hybrid Prius, except that it gets all its energy from pure hydrogen, no oil based fuel needed.

The electricity is generated from a mixture of air and hydrogen on the surface of an electroids on the fuel cell stack. It''s a chemical reaction, not burning, thus there are no harmful fumes generated. The electricity is then directed onto the electric enginge for running the car. Small lithium batteries are only needed to start the fuel cell process, and they also become activated during strong acceleration, or on standby. The outcome of the fuel cell process is pure water. See an interactive flash here.

Ok, we like the technology, but where does one get the hydrogen that needs to be put into the tank? I think this is the main issue with all new energy sources, we just cannot make up our minds which energy is the best one, so the network for energy stations is not rapidly booming. The current choices are hydrogen, direct electricity, biofuels, natural gases etc.

Do we need a governmental action here to help focus on one energy source only? It sounds a bit restrictive, but if it's the only way of making any change to current status quo, it could be a start.

Right, this is the current and ongoing debate with hydrogen-fueled vehicles. It won’t be a problem forever - slowly more and more fueling stations will pop up, then more and more people will buy the cars, etc. For now I think manufacturers should concentrate on making dual-fuel vehicles to help get over that initial hurdle.
